Challenges of Long-Distance Caregiving

Health Care & Home Care

Date: Saturday, August 23, 2025
Time: 1:20 pm

The long-distance informal caregiver supports and cares for their aging family members from afar. These individuals are family or friends living at least one hour’s drive from the care recipient. They comprise one in ten of the estimated 53 million family caregivers in the United States.  While long-distance caregivers do not provide daily care or support, they may be responsible for coordinating personal and medical care, emotional support, keeping care recipient affairs in order, and determining when more help is needed. Like caregivers providing care in the home, long-distance caregivers face several challenges. This session will provide an overview of the tasks, challenges, and management suggestions for those who provide care from a distance.  A CSA should understand the challenges and resources necessary to help clients manage this challenging journey.

Learning Objectives:

  1. The participants will be able to understand the challenges of long-distance caregiving.
  2. The participants will be able to describe various resources available as a long-distance caregiver.
  3. The participant will gain tips for managing caregiving from a distance.
