Health and Social Issues

Dr. Corinne Auman, Ph.D., CSA, is the founder and CEO of Choice Care Navigators, a nationally Certified Guardian, and an Advanced Professional member of the Aging LifeCare Association. She received her Ph.D. from NC State University, where she studied developmental psychology with a specialty in adulthood and aging.

With the Choice Care Navigators team, Corinne helps families navigate the complex world of older adult care to make well-informed decisions and the best choices with as little stress as possible. Dr. Corinne Auman

Jane W. Barton, MTS, MASM, CSA and author of Caregiving for the GENIUS, is a passionate speaker, writer and listener. As founder of Cardinal, LLC, she provides educational programs, books and blogs to assist people in confronting the daunting challenges posed by aging, serious illness and the end of life.

Jane is well-versed in the areas of grief and bereavement, caregiving, hospice and palliative care, change and transition, and spirituality and health. She presents innovative, transformational programs to community members, healthcare providers, pastoral caregivers, clergy, funeral service providers and national audiences to improve the experience of people and families challenged by serious, advanced or terminal illnesses.

Previously, Jane served as director of education for a hospice and palliative care educational institution in Denver, CO, and as a chaplain and bereavement facilitator in hospice and palliative care. Jane is a Certified Spiritual Director and a Certified Senior Advisor. In a former life, she worked as a financial services representative and as an exploration petroleum geologist and manager. Jane W. Barton

Amy D’Aprix, MSW, PhD, has been providing down-to-earth, practical, and professionally informed guidance on Life Transitions to individuals and professionals for over 30 years. “Dr. Amy,” as she is affectionately known, is passionate about helping people have more choice, control, and independence to improve their quality of life as they age.

Her company, Life Transitions by Dr. Amy, reflects her vision to change the way people think, talk and act when navigating life transitions, particularly in their last third of life. In addition, her Trusted Advisor of Choice program enables professionals to better understand their clients and prepare their clients for the financial and legal aspects of any life transition they face.

Dr. Amy has consulted extensively with MD Financial Management Inc., Bank of Montreal (BMO) Financial Group, Scotiabank and CHARTWELL Retirement Residences, addressing thousands of their financial advisors and clients across the US and Canada, and providing inspiration to people facing challenging or difficult life transitions. Dr. Amy is the author of From Surviving to Thriving: Transforming Your Caregiving Journey and numerous articles for print and online publications. She is a frequent guest on radio and TV shows including The Social, Breakfast Television and Canada AM, and CBC radio, sharing her insights on topics such as “How to Help Older Adults Navigate the Covid-19 Pandemic” and “How to Face Life Transitions with Grace and Knowledge.”

Amy D’Aprix

Jim McCabe, PhD, MSW, MPH, CSA, is the president of Eldercare Resources, a geriatric care management company that specializes in eldercare and case management services. For more than 25 years, he has assisted hundreds of families in the areas of eldercare and long-term care planning and worked extensively with professionals in the areas of estate planning, elder law and health care.

Jim also consults with companies on marketing to the senior and Boomer markets and has developed a Care Management training course for health and home care professionals.  He has served on the boards of the Financial Planning Association, the Area Agency on Aging, and Easters Seals in Phoenix, AZ, as well as two terms on the national board of the American Society on Aging.

In addition to his role as an instructor for Society of Certified Senior Advisors, Jim has taught at San Francisco State University, San Jose State University and the University of California, Berkeley. Jim holds master’s degrees from the University of Hawaii in social work and public health, and earned his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. Jim McCabe

Susan Miedzianowski, PhD, MS, MA, CPC, CSA, has more than 40 years of experience in the healthcare industry and, in her educator role, focuses on the philosophy that education should always be a fun, experiential, empowering and meaningful process.

Susan is an assistant adjunct professor teaching gerontology and the business of health care and population health at several colleges across the country. In addition to serving as an instructor for the Society of Certified Senior Advisors, Susan is a member of the CSA Journal editorial board and served as the editorial board’s chairperson for more than four years.

Susan holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Detroit, a master’s degree of science in healthcare administration from Central Michigan University, a master’s degree in aging services management from the University of Southern California and a PhD from Capella University in human services with a focus on gerontology.

Financial Issues and Government Programs

Mickey Batsell, CASL, CLU, MBA, FLMI, CLTC, CSA, is an experienced industry professional specializing in long-term care and associated issues including Medicare, Medicaid, home and facility care and wealth transfer.

With more than 40 years of professional and, more importantly, personal family experiences, Mickey has an in-depth understanding of the challenges his clients face. As a protector of people’s independence and dignity, he currently represents industry-leading, financially sound companies and assists families, groups and associations throughout the United States. He has been a regular radio talk show guest on matters relating to the long-term care industry.

Mickey has a bachelor’s degree in marketing and an MBA in accounting. He takes an active role in his industry, community and church. Mickey served on the national boards of directors for the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, the Society of Financial Services Professionals and the Alliance of Financial Management Professionals.  He is a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, the past president of the National Insurance Marketing Executives and past chair of the Society of Certified Senior Advisors Certification Council.

A retired USAFR Lt. Colonel who served in USAF Special Operations, Mickey and his wife Nancy have four children, 11 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. As a now-retired Texas high school football official, he officiated six state championship games and two high school All American Bowls; both broadcasted on ESPN.

Mickey Batsell

Kristie Kindstrom, CSA, is an expert in longevity planning and the founder and CEO of Your Honeycomb, Inc. During her 30-plus years in financial planning, Kristie discovered a gap in client preparedness in life categories such as assets, digital estates, security, daily life, health, and legacy. Your Honeycomb was founded to help bridge these gaps by creating individualized longevity plans.

Prior to founding her company, Kristie served as the Vice President of Wealth Planning and the Vice President of Municipal Fixed Income High Net Worth (HNW) Services at Raymond James, a Fortune 500 financial services company.

In her free time, Kristie enjoys volunteering in her community of Bradenton, Florida, serving as the Program Director of Start-Up Circle, a business incubator focused on building the small business community in downtown Bradenton.

Kristie Kindstrom

Reina L Schlager, CPA/PFS, CSA, has more than 34 years of experience providing financial advice and tax planning services.  Her practice included Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security planning. Prior to co-owning her financial and wealth management firm, she worked for the international accounting firm, Coopers & Lybrand, and then became Risk Manager and Assistant Treasurer of the University of Pennsylvania.

Her professional roles over the years include serving on the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) PRIME PLUS Elder Care Task Force, the Florida CPA Elder Planning and Support Services Committee, and helping found the Florida Institute of CPA’s Elder Care Symposium. She was also an officer/board member of AGELINK, an information and referral network of social services for older adults; served as Trustee and on the Advisory Board of the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center; and is currently circulating a Podcast series on “Guiding clients with diminishing mental capacity.” Reina is an expert at helping clients grow, protect, and preserve their wealth with tax strategies that coordinate with clients’ estate and investment planning.

Reina is a popular speaker and writer/guest for periodicals, television, radio, and workshops on long-term care, end-of-life planning, Social Security planning, Medicare strategies, residential living choices, and estate and tax planning. She earned the Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) credential from the AICPA and obtained her BBA Magna cum Laude from Temple University in Philadelphia. Today, she and her husband enjoy living in Florida.  They just became grandparents, and have two adult children, each living in Denver and Washington, DC.

Reina L Schlager

David Stitt, CSA, is Chair and CEO of EnterAct Software, providing comprehensive financial planning tools and services to professional financial planners, including two comprehensive personal financial planning software programs he developed. In addition, as director of seminars, he wrote and developed all seminars for Successful Money Management Seminars.

David has also been published in The Expert’s Guide to Managing and Marketing a Successful Financial Planning Practice (Prentice Hall) and hosted a local radio talk show, Money Talks.

During his 45-year career, David has served on many boards of directors and as president of local Life Underwriter and Financial Planning Associations, and as a certified member of the professional organizations that offer the following credentials: Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant, Certified Estate Planner, Certified Financial Planner®, Certified Retirement Financial Advisor, Registered Financial Consultant and Master Registered Financial Consultant.

David graduated from Miami University, Oxford, OH, with a BS in finance and banking. A lifelong Episcopalian, David is active in his local church as a lay eucharistic minister and senior warden. As chair of the evangelism committee, he organized the foundation of a mission in a neighboring community that became the fastest- growing church in the diocese. He also led a 2,200-member Elks organization in Ohio while expanding its existing 18-hole golf course by nine holes (a $1.5 million-dollar project). David has four children and nine grandchildren.

David Stitt

Mike Wilson, Certified Financial Planner® and Certified Retirement Counselor®, has worked in the financial services industry for over 30 years. He is currently the owner of Integrity Financial Planning, specializing for over 20 years in helping clients age 50+ maximize their readiness for retirement through savings, investments, and planning.  Mike is also a retirement planning advisor for Utah Retirement Systems, counseling and educating state, local government, and public education employees in Utah on investment and retirement planning principles and their state pension and defined contribution benefits.

Over his career, Mike has worked at organizations including Fidelity Investments and Invesco Mutual Funds and has developed financial education programs and taught at the College for Financial Planning, the International Foundation for Retirement Education, the National Endowment for Financial Education and Kaplan. Mike has an MBA in Finance from Baylor University and, when not talking finance, Mike enjoys mountain biking and hiking in Utah with his wife Nancy.

Mike Wilson

William P. Yurkovac, CFP® (retired), has over 37 years of experience as an independent financial advisor, providing a wide range of financial planning and consulting services specializing in estate planning, wealth management and preservation.

Bill received his Certified Financial Planner™ certification in 1990 and since 1998 has served as an instructor in all the courses in the CFP® certification program of study, as well as review courses for the CFP® certification examination.  He also has served on the boards of directors of several community-based non-profit organizations and as a mentor in the Take Stock in Children program.

A native of western Pennsylvania, Bill attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh where he graduated with a master’s degree in education.  Currently, he is enjoying semi-retirement, which allows him more time to devote to family and teaching endeavors. He and his wife Leslie are residents of Naples, FL and have four children and four grandchildren.
